Gondoliere
Bronze sculpture details
Similar constructions can also be found on the Neckar and in the Spreewald. This type of boat, which is moved with an extra-long punt pole, is completely associated with Venice. The "gondola" is almost a symbol of the city and the gondolier (the first licensed gondoliera since 2010) often not only has muscle power, but also the gift of song. Wintgens' gondolier does not sing, and to prevent him from sinking (i.e. rainwater filling his boat), the gondola has a small, barely visible water drain on the underside.
Edition in bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, chased and patinated by hand. Limited to 19 numbered and signed copies.
Udo Wintgens
Udo Wintgens lives in Duisburg, the once coal-rich Ruhr area. The trained sculptor attended master school in the southern parts of Aschaffenburg, where he completed his master's exam in the stone carving craft. Subsequently after his masters exam he completed his training to become a certified restorer.
