Bronze sculpture details

"In the three motifs from my pictorial world, the foreground is taken by what occasioned this design: to shape the view which can only be seen in a picture from one side (back or front) so that it enables a view of the hidden side in the sense of sculptural comprehension. The motif of the lying figure is taken from the picture "The Tower of Icarus" and where only the front is showing. At that time I already thought it a shame that I could not show the back at the same time, for only a three-dimensional design of a relief could fulfil its meaning. – How does the front of this back view of a nude look? – This three-dimensional designing of a painted view became the most important theme for me as a new possibility within the scope of my working with sculpture and, to my knowledge, is also rather unique in the field of art history, as far as three-dimensional expression is concerned. After I had designed these two views in three-dimensional relief, I was also interested in using a cherub's head whose front and back are identical. In the course of some experimenting, this gave rise to this triptych of the three-dimensional relief. The aesthetic aspects were then optimally brought out by the geometrically uniform base made of stainless steel and contrasting with the bronze. In this way, I hoped that the fans of my sculptural work would get almost as much enjoyment from this new aspect of my art as I do." Ernst Fuchs)
