Nikolaus took up the welder’s torch for his cubes: the figures are brought out of a solid block of iron. The technique may be different than in stone sculpting, but in both cases, it is a matter of letting the artistic idea come forth from the chosen material – and this is what Nikolaus does with his cubes in the true sense of the word. They show that you need only take one step outside the familiar, yet restrictive, supposedly so rigid framework to open up entirely new perspectives.
