Winkler was already a skilled painter and graphic artist and equipped with a journeyman's certificate as woodcarver from the Technical School of Woodcarving in Bischhofsheim when he first began his studies of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Soon, however, he concentrated entirely on his talents as a sculptor and went to Munich, where he got a degree in sculpture as a student in a master class in 1988.
