Among the many species of hummingbird is the smallest bird in existence, the bee hummingbird, barely 6 cm in size. It and all its fellow species are unrivalled flying acrobats. With their ultra-fast wing beats, they can fly forwards, sideways and even backwards. They can only achieve this athletic feat because they can suck nectar from flowers with their long beaks and tongues – a highly energy-rich diet, the kerosene of bird food, so to speak.
