Sometimes it's the little things that are enough to give an animal a name and attribute the strangest characteristics to it.
In the case of the fire salamander, with its bright yellow warning colouring, it is probably the fact that it defends itself against predators with a poisonous skin secretion. It can even spit it at them. For a long time, it was believed that anyone with such a wonder weapon would be immune to fire. This is a myth, but the fire salamander is nevertheless pretty much indestructible: it can live for up to 50 years (the living one – in bronze, it is immortal).
