It is the image of the hidden body per se: armor. Barnickel's "Tanaka" presents a samurai in his armoured cover as a hollow space. By not showing the man himself, this work of art shows the weak and vulnerable human being hidden inside.
Edition in bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, chased and patinated by hand.
Ulrich Barnickel was born in Weimar and trained in Burg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale) from 1978 to 1984. He has been firmly established on the German sculptors' scene for more than three decades.
