Even the victors of the Olympic games of antiquity had statues raised in their honour, and perhaps one of the best known works of Greek sculpture is the Discobolus (Discus Thrower) by the Greek metal caster Myron. And so the pictorial representation of sports – whether as an illustration on a winner’s cup or as a work of art – is part of a tradition that goes back for millennia.
