The stag beetle is probably one of the best-known species of beetle. Even small children can not only recognise it, but often name it too. After all, it is not only its ‘horns’ that are reminiscent of the large animal that gave it its name, but also its territorial fights, which resemble the rutting fights of red deer. And so it is the “deer” among beetles, even though its ‘horns’ are actually just strongly formed upper jaws.
